Safe Space for Dreams Project
A tribute to Bedford-Stuyvesant culture in Brooklyn, NY
The power of art
In the heart of Bedford-Stuyvesant, where time shapes a rich heritage, stories of resilience unfold. Elders await the B25 bus for church service as Boys & Girls High School students gather at the bustling McDonald's on Fulton Street. Amidst disparities, the community perseveres. Gun violence claims too many lives; healthcare and prosperity remain unequal. Yet, amidst these challenges, the spirit of Bed-Stuy endures.
“The Safe Space for Dreams mural stands as a powerful tribute, honoring lives lost and impacted, while symbolizing Bedford-Stuyvesant's resilient spirit in the face of adversity.“

The Safe Space for Dreams mural is set to become a captivating interactive art piece located in the vibrant heart of Brooklyn's Bedford-Stuyvesant neighborhood. This awe-inspiring artwork will span an impressive 30'x30' (approximately) wall on the residential building at 1545 Fulton Street, directly facing McDonald's Restaurant. It will hold the distinction of being the largest mural of its kind in all of Brooklyn, making a striking impression. Positioned at the dynamic intersection of Kingston and Throop Avenues, it will be near the C subway line.
How it started
During the ongoing COVID-19 pandemic and the social unrest sparked by the tragic death of George Floyd, Bedford-Stuyvesant has faced unprecedented challenges. The dual crises have exacerbated existing inequities in healthcare and employment, leaving residents struggling with job loss, grief, and financial hardship. Yet, amidst this adversity, the community has shown remarkable resilience. Recognizing Bed-Stuy as a vibrant and aspirational hub, the SSFD Project has taken on a mission to create a transformative mural that inspires its youth to overcome the obstacles of rising gun violence, gentrification, and economic hardship. The project aims to engage the community and become a beacon of hope by situating the mural at a bustling intersection, celebrating the neighborhood's strength and tenacity.
